Throwback Thursday! #2

It's time for another Throwback Thursday!
THROWBACK THURSDAY is a weekly meme hosted by

"It’s the nature of book blogging to focus mainly on new releases, but there are thousands of great books out there that haven’t seen the “New Releases” shelf in years. We hope to be able to bring attention to some older titles that may not be at the top of the current bestseller list, but still deserve a spot in your To-Be-Read pile."

In honor of Sharon Creech's upcoming release of
THE GREAT UNEXPECTED
September 4th 2012

I have chosen two of my all time favorite
books from my childhood:

WALK TWO MOONS (Published 1994, Winner of the Newberry Medal)
This is the story of thirteen-year-old Salamanca Tree Hiddle, from Bybanks, Kentucky, who is traveling across the country to Idaho with her grandparents. Along the way, she tells them the story of "Phoebe Winterbottom, her disappearing mother, and the lunatic." She also tells you, the reader, another more serious story about her own mother and herself.

CHASING REDBIRD (Published 1997, ALA Best Books of 1997)
Zinnia Taylor lives on a farm in Bybanks, Kentucky, with a 'slew' of brothers and sisters. One summer, Zinny discovers an overgrown trail, twenty miles long, which she becomes determined to clear. Along the way, she uncovers mysteries about her family and herself.

WHY I CHOSE THESE BOOKS:

The thing I love about Sharon Creech is that her books make an impact. They tell deep and heartfelt stories that stay with you long after you have finished reading them. My grandma gave me both of these as part of a birthday gift when I was younger. I have always been a voracious reader, but these books quickly found a place in my heart. I gobbled them up and still to this day I recommend Sharon Creech's books to any parent who asks. I am so excited and beyond lucky to have received a copy of her newest title, The Great Unexpected.
You will not find kids with super powers or high school romance in these books. I know those have become such common themes in Juvenile and YA books as of late. But that is what sets these books apart in my mind. They are wonderful, wholesome reads that all kids and adults alike should have the chance to read.
Many of her books have won awards and rightly so! I highly recommend picking up one and giving it a try.

Look for my upcoming review of The Great Unexpected!

  1. Walk Two Moons is a great book. I read it in 8th grade, and if I remember right, I did some kind of scrapbook project along with it.

BIG thanks to everyone who has nominated and awarded me in the past, but I just don't have the time to pass them on to other deserving bloggers.
