Within just had it's book anniversary! :D
To celebrate, YA author Clare Marshall has an awesome tour in store for us!
She is also hosting an equally as awesome giveaway!
Clare Marshall grew up in rural Nova Scotia with very little television and dial up internet, and yet, she turned out okay. She has a combined honours degree in journalism and psychology from the University of King’s College, and is a graduate from Humber College’s Creative Book Publishing Program. She founded Woulds & Shoulds Editing and Design in 2010 for self-published authors and businesses looking for quality editing and design services. She enjoys publishing books through her publishing imprint, Faery Ink Press, and released her first novella, Within in 2011. When she’s not writing, she enjoys playing the fiddle and making silly noises at cats.
Make sure to stop by and give Clare a follow!
Trinity Hartell’s life changed after the accident. Left with irreversible brain damage, she becomes a burden to her mother, a cause for heartbreak for her boyfriend Zack, and a flattened obstacle for her best friend, Ellie.
But then she starts writing. Perhaps it’s a coincidence that the psychotic, murdering protagonist of her novel bears a striking similarity to the charming Wiley Dalton, a mayoral candidate in the upcoming election.
Or, perhaps not...

Intrigued yet?? Well my lovely followers, keep reading because
I have a special teaser just for you!
The moon was full, and so it was time.
Edmund drew his large black hood over his face, and with his fellow brethren, walked across the Commons’ dewy grass. It had rained for a few hours just after sunset, and according to the lingering dark clouds that threatened to block the moon, it would rain once more before the sun returned to the sky.
There was not a soul wandering around the Halifax Common—locally known as the Commons—and Edmund had worked hard to keep it that way. His brethren patrolled the edges of the park, donned various civilian disguises, and kept the unsuspecting folk away during the times of meeting. There was no violence, not to the innocent and undeserving. Most of those folks worked hard for what they had and he respected that. So he paid them back in kind by keeping the grass clean of blood.
But to those that were Impure…
It had been what his father always taught him. They’re not our kind, Edmund. We might live among them, but that doesn’t mean we got to like them. Sons and daughters of slaves is what they are. They were still rolling around in the dirt while we were farming the land.
Now on to my review!
I went into this tour not knowing much about Clare or Within, but was more than happy to help her promote! She has accomplished pretty much exactly what I would like to (well minus the writing a book part, I don't think I'd be very good at that...) I loved what she is doing with her website and business! Anywho, after reading the synopsis of Within I was definitely intrigued. The main character suffers brain damage from a terrible accident. Her mother and boyfriend are distraught. Then one day she starts writing. Not just the alphabet, but a dark and twisted tale. Yes, I definitely wanted to know what this story was all about.
Clare left a note for reviewers on her site that said Within was not a book for everyone. She also told us that it did not contain your typical love triangle and that the story builds scene by scene. I found this to be a really neat thing for an author to do. Needless to say, I was definitely not sure what to expect from Within.
This book was different. In a great way. It's momentum built slowly, which I know might not appeal to all readers. However, it worked--really well--for this story! I liked the constantly changing points of view. You got to experience the dark and gritty mind of Within's bad guy while also seeing the story from another light.
Being a Novella in length, I think Clare did a great job putting together a cohesive and complete story. I didn't get the feeling that anything was lacking as I was reading.
Readers be warned though, some of the scenes are a bit graphic in nature. When I say you get to experience things through the bad guy...yea you really do. His whole world. However, I will say that this POV is necessary to become fully immersed in this story.
Within is full of emotion and it really comes bubbling out in Clare's characters. You will feel your heart strings being pulled off and on through the entirety of the book. Each character has their part and they play it well!
I really liked so many things about Within. Originality, suspense, THE COVER! I can't believe I haven't mentioned how much I adore the cover. Some covers just really catch my eye and this one sure did! I could probably stuff so much more into this review, but honestly, you should go snag a copy for yourself instead. If you are looking for something that totally lacks the cookie cutter plot, this book will deliver. Within is definitely worth the read and I am looking forward to reading more of Clare's work in the near future.
All right guys! It's time to win your very own paperback copy!
Thank you Jill for the review ^_^ I'm so glad you liked it!
